One the of Mac's hallmarks is its reputation for hardware reliability, so when you're trying to make Skype calls and your webcam doesn't want to take part, you might be taken off guard. The problem could be as simple as another program refusing to relinquish control of the webcam or as severe as an operating system incompatibility. Many third-party webcams are designed for Windows systems with Mac OS X as an afterthought.

Another Program Is Using the Camera

Lifecam Studio Software Windows 7

Programs do not like to cooperate with each other when more than one is trying to use the webcam at a given time. If the webcam was working in another program earlier and now won't run in Skype, it may be because the other program is still using the webcam. You can troubleshoot cross-program use by closing all other programs that could be using the webcam and restarting Skype; restart the Mac if that doesn't work.

Update the Skype Program

Updating the Skype program to the latest version for all callers may resolve compatibility problems with the webcam. If you or the person you are trying to call is using Skype version 2.8 or earlier and the other person is using version 6.2 or later, you will not be able to use video. Skype version 6.2 discontinues compatibility with version 2.8 and earlier. While Skype may work with older versions, Skype lists using the latest version as a requirement for video calling. Additionally, updating Skype can also resolve rarely occurring issues with a bad or corrupted program installation.

Test the Webcam

Testing the webcam can rule out incompatibility and configuration issues. You can test the webcam within Skype's menu bar by selecting 'Skype,' 'Preferences' and 'Audio/Video.' If you have more than one webcam connected to the Mac, select the one you want to use from the 'Camera' drop-down menu. The webcam works if you can see the preview feed. You can isolate the problem to Skype specifically by testing the webcam in another program like FaceTime, Photo Booth or iMovie.

Incorrectly Installed Camera

Lifecam Studio For Windows 10

The webcam will not work with Skype on a Mac if it is not correctly installed. Try reconnecting the physical connector and rebooting the system with external webcams to rule out connection issues. Install the most recent drivers or software for your specific webcam if the manufacturer makes them. If the manufacturer doesn't support the Mac platform, try installing a third-party driver like Macam or USB WebCam Driver.

Camera Incompatibility Issues

According to Skype, most Mac-compatible webcams work with Skype, but some older models may have problems. Skype recommends using a Skype certified webcam to guarantee compatibility. Unless the webcam is Universal Video Class compliant, it is not guaranteed to work on Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later systems with Apple's generic webcam software. Additionally, the webcam may have limited functionality when running on UVC instead of a proprietary driver.

The mounting base features a flexible rubberized mount base that allows to attach the LifeCam Studio to the display or to the TV. There’s also a new tripod thread in the bottom of the mount. The camera itself is mounted in a ‘gun’ position and swivels 360° but won’t tilt. The only tilt available is a digital one, the only free move is the horizontal one. The camera is attached to the base with a bearing and moves smoothly.

Drivers don’t come from the box, they’re to be detected automatically after the webcam is plugged in or downloaded from the Microsoft official site. LifeCam Studio software, called Dashboard, is the same for all the LifeCam family and got a lot of video filters in a bundle plus digital tilt, zoom and live frames for fun. A user can tweak the resolution, the colors, the video frequency and the microphone sensitivity. There’s also an option to send the logs to the developers. Users can contribute to improving bugs and faults.

  • TrueColor image processing technology provides superior color and brightness in all lighting conditions, low light and backlight included. TrueColor Technology sets the correct brightness balance so that the user’s face won’t be overexposed or underexposed. In a bright morning and in a dusk you’ll look as natural as possible without your face turning purple blue or crimson, or grey. This is achieved through a precisely designed combination of software and firmware.
  • Despite the moniker Studio the webcam still features the CMOS sensor. The sensor in question distorts objects, especially the moving ones, they can look wobbled or skewed.
  • The Windows Live Call button works only with Windows Live Messenger.
  • LifeCam Studio mic doesn’t feature noise suppression.
  • Video records maximum quality is 720p and 15 frames per second. For better quality extra software is needed.

Troubleshooting

If the LifeCam is not detected by your system, do the following:

  • Disconnect and reconnect the LifeCam.
  • Disconnect other unused USB devices.
  • Use a different USB port on the computer. If you can, connect to a USB 2.0 port.
  • If you are using a USB hub, unplug the LifeCam from the hub and plug it directly into your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Uninstall, and then reinstall the LifeCam software.
  • If the LifeCam is reported to be used by some other application, do the following:
  • Close the LifeCam software and any other program that may be using your LifeCam. (You cannot run the LifeCam software and make a video call with your instant messenger program at the same time since they both require complete, unshared access to your LifeCam webcam.)
  • Start the video call again from your instant messaging program.

If you have some problems with your video audio, e.g. you can’t hear see your contact, or your contact can’t hear see you, do the following:

  • Check the connection of the LifeCam. Make sure the LifeCam is properly plugged into the USB port.
  • Make sure you have the latest drivers or the latest Windows 10 Update installed.
  • Make sure your sound is not muted and check the volume.
  • Make sure your Internet connection is fast enough to support video calls.
  • Choose the lower resolution in the Dashboard.

Saving Videos and Captures from Your LifeCam
